There’s a version of your desk that exists only in your head. Clean surface. One notebook. A coffee mug. Maybe a plant. No cables. No charger brick sitting in the middle like it owns the place.
The real desk usually looks different. There’s the charger adapter sitting loose. Two or three cables pooled somewhere on the right side. A phone propped against something. The general feeling that things have simply accumulated.
The instinct is to buy more organisation products — a cable tray here, a stand there, a drawer organiser, a monitor riser with built-in USB ports. But the result is usually the same desk, just with more objects on it.
The three-thing principle
A calmer desk doesn’t need more organisation. It needs three things fixed.
The first is your charger. Not the cable — the adapter. That chunky two-pin brick that lives somewhere on your desk or falls off the side. It doesn’t have a home. Give it one. A small dock that cradles it and routes the cable neatly out of the base changes the entire feel of the area. The cable stops being a loose coil and becomes a thing that goes somewhere.
The second is your active cables. The ones you actually reach for — USB-C, Lightning, maybe a 3.5mm. These should be upright and within reach. Not coiled up, not hanging off the back of your desk, not tangled with the charger. A simple clamp on the desk edge that holds them upright, open-top for instant grab, is all this needs.
The third depends on your setup. For most people, it’s either the phone stand situation or the headphone situation. But fix the first two and you’ll find the third becomes obvious.
Why three?
Because three is the number you can actually execute. “Organise my desk” is a project you’ll never start. “Give the charger a home and sort the cables” takes twenty minutes and stays done.
